Ledbetter to remain away from team while he continues to get treatment

Jonathan Ledbetter will remain away from the team while he continues to get treatment.

ATLANTAKirby Smart said Monday there’s still no timetable for when suspended defensive end Jonathan Ledbetter will be allowed to play for the Bulldogs this fall.

“Basically, we’ll find out as it goes along,” said Smart, who spoke to the media Monday afternoon prior to an alumni function at the International Buckhead Hotel. “It’s not a set determined number. As of right now it’s a situation that’s fluid and moving.”

Ledbetter, you’ll recall, was arrested for DUI back on July 10, when police found his car in an intersection with the sophomore defensive end asleep at the wheel.

According to Smart, Ledbetter will remain away from the team and not take part in any team workouts or activities while he continues to receive treatment as a result of the arrest.

“It’s more important to me for you guys to ask how Jonathan is doing … Nobody asks that,” Smart said. “The only question I get every time I go somewhere is what’s Jonathan’s suspension going to be. I’m waiting on one of y’all to ask, 'How’s Jonathan doing?' ”

Smart was ultimately asked.

“That’s more important me than how many games he gets suspended at the end of the day,” Smart said. “I wish THAT could be the focal point instead of what is his punishment … how many games is he suspended. Let’s talk about what’s good for Jonathan.”

Smart was asked why he feels so strongly about the situation.

“I feel strongly because I’ve seen his mom," Smart said. "I’ve seen his mom sit in my office and I’ve seen here in tears. I know his brother, I know this kid. I know what the kid’s going through.

"It was a situation where the kid needed help, he’s now getting that help and I hope he can make some changes in his life to make himself better so 10 years down the road he’ll a successful contributor to our society and that’s our ultimate goal.”

Smart continued.

“That’s what I’m passionate about. It’s not important to me right now whether he plays in the first game, second game or third game, fourth game. It’s about what’s going to be best for Jonathan to be at his best down the road and not worry about what game he’s suspended for and not suspended for.”
